Sitting before my altar, I take refuge in my mindfulness practice.  The beauty of the space helps me settle into the silence. Across the altar I've spread a scarf the color of a turquoise sea and on top of that objects of special significance to me, such as pictures and figurines representing my spiritual and blood ancestors and living spiritual teachers.  My love of nature is represented by some rocks and a dried starfish. There is the metta meditation to help me always remember compassion. There is a candle for soft light, should it be dark when I sit and a small brass bowl with mallet for inviting the beautiful sound of the bell at the beginning and end of my sit.  Next to the altar is a yoga mat, which I use for a yoga practice in the morning, before I sit.
